AUC To Hold a press conference on Saturday, June 27, 4:30 pm at Watson Hall at AUC New Cairo for the Emirati businessman philanthropist, Abdulaziz Al Ghurair, CEO of The Mashreq Bank and chairman of Abdallah Al Ghurair Foundation for Education (AGFE), one of the largest privately funded philanthropic education initiatives in the world. Speakers at the press conference are Abdulaziz Al Ghurair; Maysa Jalbout, CEO of the Abdullah Al Ghurair Foundation for Education and AUC President Francis J. Ricciardone.
The conference will highlight the collaboration between Al Ghurair Foundation and AUC in the field of education in the light of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between both entities in 2016 to create opportunities for high-achieving, underserved Arab youth to access and succeed in higher education through the foundation’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Scholars Program. A scholarship program was established under the name of Al Ghurair STEM Scholars that targeted high-achieving Arab students, while AUC facilitated academic, career and mentorship support, as well as community service and internship opportunities that Al Ghurair STEM Scholars need to succeed in their education and future employment.
The first cohort of the program, which launched this fall, included 33 Al Ghurair scholars, both undergraduate and graduate students. The conference will not only highlight the educational philanthropic initiatives of Al Ghurair Foundation in Egypt but will also shed the light of its initiatives in the region, specifically for educating refugees. Al Ghurair, who will also be the guest speaker for Spring 2017 undergraduate commencement, will stress on the role of businessmen and their responsibility to give back their societies through philanthropic initiatives.
Further demonstrating his philanthropic efforts, Al Ghurair is the president of FBN GCC, a nonprofit international network that is run by family businesses, for family businesses. The organization aims to strengthen family business governance and thus guarantee success across generations. Al Ghurair is also a trustee of New York University President’s Global Council and is on the board of directors of Emirates Foundation.
Since 2012, Al Ghurair has been the chairman of the UAE Banking Federation. Moreover, he is the vice chairman of the higher board of Dubai International Financial Centre, and chairman of Masafi Company and Oman Insurance.
