Those in search of a brighter, whiter smile are being empowered to take control of their dental health thanks to the launch of a new app created by Dr.Yasser Stas, a leading dentist based in Saudi Arabia.

The app, which is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), allows patients to book an appointment and receive appointment reminders and dental health tips, revolutionising the way that people interact with their dentist. Users can also enjoy reduced waiting times thanks to booking through the app.

The move is especially welcome considering the rising number of diabetics in the region – which currently stands at more than 35 million and is expected to rise to 72 million by 2040 – who are at an increased risk of serious gum disease*. Furthermore, with an estimated 90% of children in Saudi Arabia affected by tooth decay**, the Dr.Yasser Stas Clinic app provides a vital tool in helping families to keep a check on their dental health.

“I see many patients at my clinic in Madina seeking top quality dental treatment who have been put off by longer waiting times, who are long overdue an check up and need reminding to keep up regular appointments, or would benefit from timely dental health tips direct to their smartphone or tablet,” said Dr.Yasser Stas. “This is how the idea for the app came about, as I wanted to offer a fuss-free solution for access to good dental care. In Saudi Arabia, the app offers our growing number of female clients with the convenience of booking, and I see huge potential for the technology to be embraced in other destinations in the region.”

The link between diabetes and oral health is a two way street. Emerging research** suggests that people with diabetes are more susceptible to serious gum disease (periodontitis) but also that serious gum disease may have the potential to affect blood glucose control and contribute to the progression of diabetes.

“Maintaining good oral health is vital for general health,” adds Dr. Stas. “So be sure to brush and floss properly and see your dentist for regular check-ups.”

The dental market in (MENA is undergoing a period of rapid development with GCC Oral Health Unified Week helping to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health, high-level meetings such as the UAE International Dental Conference & Arab Dental Exhibition attracting experts from around the world and a growing number of dental clinics opening in the region.

The Dr.Yasser Stas Clinic app can be downloaded from App Store and Google Store.
