Two out of three people in the UAE intend to lose weight this summer (10.3 kg on average)

Dubai, UAE: In a survey conducted by Allurion amongst 1,000 people aged 18 – 65 in the UAE, it was brought to light that 67% of the population intends to lose weight this summer with a significant average of 10.3Kg. The report also stated that the Coronavirus pandemic has been at the catalyst of the community’s weight concerns. During the time of lockdown, restricted movement and additional personal stress, altered the communities approach to food, making way for a new normal of heightened snacking, and thus a trend of indulgence and worrying health complications.

It was reported by Allurion that besides keeping in contact with family and friends via video and phone calls, one of the most increased activities during the pandemic was snacking, with 53% of the UAE residents eating more frequently between meals than they used to do before the pandemic. Interestingly, besides being less physically active, snacking has been identified as the main cause of weight gain in the UAE, with a resulting 47% of UAE residents eating more than they used to before the pandemic.

This survey results come at a time where Allurion sees its second approval by the UAE Ministry of Health, which offers a solution for many to tackle their weight loss challenges via a world first and only weight loss device that requires no surgery, endoscopy, or anaesthesia. Available across clinics in the United Arab Emirates, the Elipse Program supports long-term weight loss through a revolutionary gastric balloon that creates a feeling of fullness by taking up space in the stomach, providing patients with the chance to take a break from dieting and that all too familiar feeling of hunger.

This approval comes at a perfect time for the UAE with weight being the second personal aspect about which UAE residents are less happy, just behind their financial situation. It creates more concerns than one’s job and personal relationships and only worries about one’s own and loved ones’ health have caused more stress. Today 47% of UAE residents eat more than they used to do before the pandemic. This increased weight-gain has seen a country enter into the next half of the year with 51% of its population stating they have gained weight during the pandemic with a significant increase of 8.0 Kg.

With this at the forefront of Allurion’s mission, The Elipse Program continues to change the approach to weight loss. With over 40,000 patients worldwide, the Elipse Balloon registered with the UAE Ministry of Health, allows patients to lose an average of 10 to 15% of their body weight through a holistic approach that reinforces that no weight loss program is a magic bullet and an effective program is based on good healthcare and good science.

A Gastric Balloon is a soft balloon placed in your stomach. The balloon takes up space in your stomach and induces weight loss by increasing the feeling of fullness. This means that you are more likely to reduce the amount of food you eat throughout the day.
