Canon announces the winner of its first Redline Challenge photo competition, with the theme of Light in the Dark, and a shortlist of exceptional images from over 36,000 entries

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: Canon is thrilled to reveal the winner of its Light in the Dark themed Redline Challenge photography competition as Piotr Skrzypiec from Poland, now living in Slovenia, who wowed judges with his striking photo, Lost Highway. Piotr will receive over €14,000 worth of Canon kit including the EOS R5 and RF lenses to help take his craft to the next level along with a personal photography assignment and mentoring session with judge and Canon Ambassador, Lorenz Holder. Also announced are the outstanding shortlisted photos.

Commenting on his win, Piotr Skrzypiec said: “It’s hard to describe how it feels – it is both a big surprise and a huge achievement, especially as when I entered, I submitted three pictures and discovered that all of them had been shortlisted. The prize is the best set of equipment I could imagine, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the Canon EOS R5. It looks like the perfect tool for the kind of photography I do – landscapes, wildlife and macro.”

The winning photo and shortlist were chosen from 36,195 images by Canon’s esteemed panel of judges in a video hosted by vlogger and photographer Kai Wong, which is available to watch on the Canon YouTube channel with behind the scenes insight into the judging process. Alongside Lorenz Holder, judges include Canon Ambassador and world-class documentary photographer Laura El-Tantawy, award-winning artistic director and curator Monica Allende, Senior Editor for The Wider Image, Gabrielle Fonseca Johnson and European Marketing Director for Canon EMEA, Susie Donaldson.

From moody street scenes to neon-soaked portraits, entrants of the Redline Challenge pushed the boundaries of their creativity with new styles and techniques. The shortlisted photographers listed below were selected for their ability to reimagine the theme of Light in the Dark – creating images which were both technically and interpretively original.

Judge and ITCG European Marketing Director for Canon EMEA, Susie Donaldson said: “As a judge of the Redline Challenge, I was blown away by how many unique interpretations of the theme there were and the technical ability of the entrants. There were a number of incredible photos but the winning image, Lost Highway, had such impact we just kept coming back to it. It really reflected the theme and the times we are in right now, perfectly capturing the idea of emerging from something, taking a new turn into hopefully more positive times. Congratulations to all of the shortlisted photographers and to Piotr, our winner – we look forward to seeing what you capture with your new Canon kit!”
