Dubai, UAE: Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is organising a virtual workshop titled ‘The Art of Reading’ for preparatory and high school students that will be given by Emirati writer Waleed Al Marzouqi at the Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation in Dubai. This comes within the framework of Reading Youth Club that was launched by the Authority as part of its initiatives aimed at improving the services provided in its public libraries based on the proposals of students participating in the second edition of the Young City Makers Championship. The championship was initiated by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, to involve the youth in improving government services and implementing initiatives that would keep pace with their future aspirations.

Reading Youth Club seeks to offer a cultural dialogue to discuss a book in one of the library’s halls as well as invite and host youth and students to participate. Two sessions were held, the first of which was in August 2020 with author Haya Al Qassim where remote learning during the pandemic was discussed, and the second took place in February 2021 with writer Mohammed Al Habsi during which reading challenges were discussed.

The third session will be held on 5 April 2021 at 10 a.m. via Microsoft Teams with writer Waleed Al Marzouqi, who has published several books, most prominently ‘Yes We Can’ and ‘Emirati Excellence: From Hard Beginning to Great Achievements.’ He is also a presenter and broadcaster at Dubai Media Incorporated – Sama Dubai Channel. The Authority looks forward to welcoming a large number of participants in this session, especially young Emirati people and students.

The Reading Youth Club initiative is part of a group of initiatives implemented by Dubai Culture to keep pace with the youth’s future aspirations regarding public library services. In December 2019, as part of the Young City Makers Championship, Dubai Culture organised a workshop on ‘Membership Service of Public Libraries’ at Al Safa Art & Design Library through which the Authority introduced students to the service, as well as its most important challenges, to derive solutions and launch initiatives under the service’s umbrella. Dubai Culture received 16 ideas to improve the services provided by Dubai Public Libraries as well as proposed future services.

The Authority approved five initiatives that will be implemented across Dubai Public Library branches. In addition to the Reading Youth Club, Dubai Culture implemented the ‘Find Your Book’ initiative in February 2020, which allows the public to select books to purchase through the Dubai Public Library app and search the map for the nearest public library to acquire them from. Dubai Culture is also planning to implement another initiative titled ‘My Book is Your Book,’ which will provide a spot for donating and exchanging books at Al Safa Art & Design Library.
