New format increases access to one-year programme for healthcare workers in the UAE who wish to hone their skills in diabetes management or education

Dr Nader Lessan, a consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist at ICLDC

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Mubadala Health’s Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) has opened registration for its popular professional development course in diabetes management. For the second year, it is being offered in a revised format with online components, thus extending access to healthcare workers across the UAE, with courses starting from January.

ICLDC began offering the Imperial Diabetes Educator Training Course (IDET) in 2014. The multidisciplinary programme equips healthcare employees to work in diabetes education and management in a variety of settings. Taught over a year, the course is open to nurses, dietitians, pharmacists and other healthcare workers with a current licence to practise.

Dr Nader Lessan, a consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist at ICLDC and director of the programme, says: “This course is part of ICLDC’s commitment to contribute to the entire healthcare system in Abu Dhabi, and to promote knowledge transfer in endocrinology, diabetes management and advanced medicine across the region. More than 79 graduates have successfully completed the course and have furthered their careers in diabetes education and management since it began.”

He adds: “As the burden of diabetes continues to escalate around the world, so does the need for a new generation of diabetes educators who can teach patients and their carers how to take charge of their conditions, while also raise awareness and educate the community on diabetes testing and good lifestyle habits. Now that we are offering the course online, we have been able to increase access to the latest tools, resources and expert knowledge to prepare more professionals here and in the region.”

The 2022 cohort will be able to attend online lectures that cover the theoretical aspects of diabetes management and patient education, while the practical component is completed at ICLDC’s facilities in Abu Dhabi. The course will be held every Wednesday from 5:30pm – 7:30pm (UAE), with supplementary lessons on select Mondays.

The course is held in partnership with Imperial College London and includes case seminars and clinical training on chronic disease self-management education, applied biological and behavioural sciences, principles of teaching and learning, and best practice management of diabetes. Graduates will be eligible to be licenced as Health Educators by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DOH).

Interested applicants should be licensed healthcare professionals (by Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, Dubai Health Authority or Ministry of Health) in fields such as nursing, dietetics or pharmacy and be fluent in English (IELTS or equivalent). Applicants need to pass an ICLDC entry interview to be participate.
