Englishman beats Danny Wıllett and Andrew Johnston to the coveted “Captain’s Hat”
Kuwait: On the eve of the Turkish Airlines Open Golf Lee Westwood was crowned the first ever Drone Golf Champion.
Taking to the iconic 16th tee on the roof of a spectacular villa at the Regnum Carya Golf and Spa Resort in Antalya, Turkey, Westwood expertly maneuvered his drone around numerous hazards before dropping a golf ball from the drone on to a green to seal his victory, beating Masters champion Danny Willett and Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston.
Westwood said; “This is undoubtedly one of the highlights of my career, one of my proudest moments. I am really pleased to kick off the week with a win. It was really tough stepping up to the tee with the winds being so strong and not having used a drone before but with the help of my drone caddy there was no stopping me. I hope to defend my Turkish Airlines Drone Golf Championship trophy next year.”
On finishing second, Danny Willett said; “I am gutted, it clearly wasn’t my night. Hopefully I can do a bit better than that on the golf course this week.”
On hosting the first ever Turkish Airlines Drone Golf Championship Ms. Seda Kalyoncu, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications of Turkish Airlines said; “Turkish Airlines is very proud to be hosting the first ever Drone Golf Championship and huge congratulations to the winner Lee Westwood. The Turkish Airlines Open is the first of three tournaments in The Race to Dubai’s Final Series, with 78 players competing for a $7 million prize fund and took place between November 3rd and 6th, 2016. Turkish Airlines is the headline sponsor of the tournament and flies to 292 destinations, 243 international and 49 domestic, around the world. The leading airline was also recently chosen as ‘Europe’s Best Airline’ for the sixth straight year by Skytrax.
