Low back pain (LBP) has become the leading cause of disability worldwide. According to the 2020 World Physiotherapy Report, one in 13 people experienced low back pain that year, underscoring the widespread impact of this condition. Low back pain significantly diminishes the quality of life, but it can be managed effectively with the right combination of treatments such as exercise, posture education, and lifestyle modifications.
The lower back, which supports the weight of the upper body and distributes it evenly across the lower body, is crucial for daily functioning. When problems arise in this area, they can lead to severe limitations in everyday activities such as bending and twisting. The severity of low back pain can range from a mild, dull ache to severe, debilitating pain. The intensity typically depends on the underlying cause, which may include poor posture, herniated discs, arthritis, muscle and ligament strains, or osteoporosis.
Physiotherapy plays a pivotal role in managing low back pain. Key approaches in physiotherapy include postural education, manual therapy, strengthening and stretching exercises, and the application of heat and cold. Additionally, lifestyle modifications are crucial to preventing the recurrence of symptoms. Early intervention is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and preventing further complications.
Effective management of low back pain not only enhances an individual’s quality of life but also reduces the overall burden on healthcare systems worldwide. By addressing the root causes and implementing comprehensive treatment strategies, individuals can lead healthier, more active lives.
