New Bloomberg Shariah Sukuk Indices Address Benchmark Needs in Rapidly Expanding Global Islamic Debt Markets

5

Bloomberg Indices today announced the launch of the Bloomberg Shariah Sukuk Indices designed to track the performance of the global Sukuk markets and provide market participants with transparent, rules-based fixed income benchmarks that align with Shariah requirements while maintaining institutional standards.

The global Sukuk market surpassed USD 1 trillion in outstanding debt as of year-end 2025 according to Bloomberg data, a scale that drives the need for sophisticated benchmark and risk analysis tools. Bloomberg’s new Sukuk and Shariah Sukuk indices offer coverage across multiple currencies and segments, including multi-currency, US Dollar-denominated, Investment Grade, High Yield, and regional segmentation, such as Emerging Markets and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

“The continued maturation of global Sukuk markets is driving demand for transparent, institutional-grade benchmarks that support Shariah-compliant investing,” said Nick Gendron, Global Head of Fixed Income Index Product Management at Bloomberg Index Services Limited. “The Bloomberg Shariah Sukuk Indices are designed to meet this need by combining a robust, rules-based methodology with strong governance standards, enabling investors to construct, benchmark, and develop Shariah-compliant fixed income portfolios with confidence.”

The Bloomberg Shariah Sukuk indices were developed using Bloomberg Indices’ standard rules-based fixed income index framework, incorporating Shariah compliance assessment from IdealRatings that is based on the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institution’s (AAOIFI) Shariah standards, to support a consistent and standardized index framework across fixed income products.

For more than 50 years, Bloomberg Fixed Income Indices have been the most widely used for fixed income investors seeking objective, rules-based, and representative benchmarks to measure asset class risk and return. There are more than 500 ETFs with over $1 trillion in assets tracking a Bloomberg fixed income index. Bloomberg offers flagship benchmarks, including the Bloomberg US Aggregate, as well as a growing selection of Euro, Asia-Pac, China, Emerging Market, Municipal, High-Yield, Inflation-Linked, ESG, Climate and other custom indices.

Bloomberg clients can access the new indices on the Bloomberg Terminal at {ISLM<GO>} and {IN <GO>}.All relevant research and index methodology documents are available on the Bloomberg Indices Documentation page.
