Safety Starts Long Before the Unexpected: Nissan and AWR Automotive’s Approach to Driver Safety

8

Every journey begins with a destination in mind. Yet what determines whether that journey ends safely is often shaped long before an unexpected moment occurs. Road safety is not defined solely by how a vehicle performs during a critical situation, but by how effectively it helps drivers avoid one altogether.

This belief underpins the collaboration between Nissan Middle East, AWR Automotive, and Dubai Police through the Drive with Awareness campaign. While each plays a different role, they share a common objective: creating safer roads by combining public awareness, responsible driving, and intelligent vehicle technologies that help reduce risk before it becomes an incident.

Safety Begins Before the Journey

In the UAE, driving is an integral part of daily life. Long commutes, inter-emirate travel, multi-lane highways, and increasingly busy urban roads place constant demands on drivers. In this environment, safety extends well beyond protecting occupants in the event of a collision. It begins with helping drivers remain alert, anticipate hazards, and make informed decisions throughout every journey.

That philosophy sits at the heart of Dubai Police’s Drive with Awareness campaign, which uses educational content, public engagement, and interactive initiatives to encourage safer driving behaviours across the UAE. The campaign addresses some of the country’s most common causes of road accidents, including sudden lane changes, tailgating, distracted driving, and fatigue.

The importance of this approach is reflected in the latest road safety data. According to Dubai Police, unsafe lane changes accounted for nearly 2,000 accidents over a two-year period, while road fatalities declined by approximately 19% between 2024 and 2025. The figures demonstrate the impact that can be achieved when enforcement, public awareness, and advancements in vehicle safety work together toward a shared goal.

For Nissan, that contribution begins inside the vehicle.

Intelligent Technology That Supports Better Decisions

Nissan approaches safety as an integrated system rather than a collection of individual features. Its suite of Intelligent Mobility technologies is designed to enhance driver awareness, reduce workload, and provide timely support in situations where every second and every decision matter.

On long highway journeys, fatigue and reduced concentration can gradually affect even the most experienced drivers. ProPILOT Assist helps ease that burden by maintaining a preset distance from the vehicle ahead while providing steering assistance to help keep the vehicle centred within its lane. Rather than replacing the driver, it reduces routine driving effort, allowing the driver to remain more focused throughout the journey.

When unexpected situations arise, reaction time becomes critical. Intelligent Emergency Braking continuously monitors the road ahead and can automatically apply the brakes if a potential collision is detected. By monitoring not only the vehicle directly ahead but also the vehicle in front of it, the system provides an additional layer of awareness, particularly in heavy traffic where sudden braking can quickly create chain reactions.

Many everyday hazards also develop outside a driver’s immediate field of vision. Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and Traffic Sign Recognition provide useful information at the right moment without becoming intrusive. Meanwhile, the Intelligent Around View Monitor delivers a virtual 360-degree view around the vehicle, making parking and low-speed manoeuvring easier and safer, while Adaptive Front-lighting and High Beam Assist improve visibility during night driving without affecting other road users.

Together, these technologies are designed to support, not replace, the driver, helping people make better decisions and reducing the likelihood of everyday incidents before they occur.

A Shared Commitment to Safer Roads

Road safety is a shared responsibility. It relies on authorities that educate and enforce, manufacturers that continue to innovate, and drivers who make responsible choices every time they get behind the wheel.

The collaboration between Nissan Middle East, AWR Automotive, and Dubai Police reflects that shared commitment. Through the Drive with Awareness campaign, it brings together awareness, technology, and community engagement around a common purpose: helping make every journey safer.

Because ultimately, the safest journeys are not defined by how well we respond when something goes wrong, they are shaped by everything we do to prevent it from happening in the first place.
