Cooperation for the „Factory of the future“

Mitutoyo is a DMG MORI Qualified Products (DMQP) partner

Mitutoyo has been included into the „DMG MORI Qualified Products“ (DMQP) program – with the goal to supply combinations of high-end precision machining and high-end inline precision measuring tools to the customers. Dr. Eng. Masahiko Mori, President and CEO of DMG MORI, and Shigeyuki Sasaki, Acting President of Mitutoyo Corporation, sealed this partnership during the DMG MORI Open House in Pfronten/ Germany.

The DMG MORI Qualified Products portfolio is growing continuously and now includes a wide range of machine components, peripherals, and accessories—including tools, clamping devices, software, measuring technology, and cooling lubricants. This range is increasingly being supplemented by digital solutions that specialize machines and machining processes or make them more efficient. In order to meet the increasing demands for technological diversity and innovation, DMG MORI is continuously expanding its range. At the Open House Pfronten at the beginning of February, four new partner companies were presented whose technologies make a significant contribution to productive manufacturing – in the case of Mitutoyo, the reliable integration of precision measuring into the machining process.

During the DMG MORI Open House in Pfronten/Germany– a ten-days event with more than 6,700 visitors –, Dr. Eng. Masahiko Mori, President and CEO of DMG MORI, and Shigeyuki Sasaki, Acting President of Mitutoyo Corporation, officially started Mitutoyo´s entry in the DMQP partnership, marking a new milestone in the cooperation of the two companies (photo)

This cooperation has intensified over the last years. John Kooning, Managing Director of DMG MORI NL who has promoted Mitutoyo´s integration into the DMQP program: „Mitutoyo has been actively participating at our Open Houses for many years, showcasing the perfect fit and added value of their products with our machines. In Europe, we have also expanded this to the important trade fair EMO in 2023 and 2025.“

The DMQP status of Mitutoyo must be seen in the perspective of the DMG MORI Machining Transformation (MX) strategy which signifies no less than the revolution of manufacturing. An important part of MX is Technology Integration, meaning that several processes such as turning, milling, grinding and also measurement functions are combined in one machine tool for higher productivity. This integration reduces the number of operators needed, frees them from having to carry out multiple setups and contributes to a rewarding working environment within a company. More time can be devoted to high value-added operations, making work more rewarding for staff.

Integrated measurement is the keyword for Mitutoyo here. Pralhad Thapa, Manager Business Solution: „DMG MORI has chosen our compact CMM MiSTAR 555 which can be, physically, installed in-line in the production, in the direct vicinity of the machine. Handling from one machine to the other and vice versa can be executed by a robot. On the software side, a direct combination is created via DMG MORI´s Tulip software.“

The result: The customer can combine precision machining – integrated milling, turning, grinding etc. – with high-precision measuring, without the need to transport the parts to a dedicated measuring room or lab. In effect, stable dimensions can be guaranteed even when utmost precision is necessary, and any offset will be recognized so early that the user can react before tolerances are exceeded. Scrap will be reduced, productivity is accelerated.

The MiSTAR 555 is the perfect coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for this purpose because it was designed for factory-floor applications of nearly any size or shape. It is, for instance, able to operate at temperatures between 10 oC and 40 oC. Even in not so favorable environments, it delivers exceptional speed and accuracy, creating, in effect, the pre-requisite for high utilization of one machining center instead of partial utilization of several simple machines. This is a clear goal of the DMG MORI MX Machining Transformation as an efficient path to the “Factory of the future”. Mitutoyo is proud to be part of this strategy.

Apart from the inline-CNC CMM, other Mitutoyo precision tools and machines will be available within the DMQP offering. These offerings also include packages for schools and universities: The two companies have been cooperating in this field for a long time, bringing additional knowledge to the shopfloor. And there are other similarities. Henk Slotboom, Marketing Director of Mitutoyo Europe: „For DMG MORI as well as for Mitutoyo, social commitment is very important, and we both set very high quality standards within our markets.“
