Last month, the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) and Etihad Water and Electricity (Etihad WE) unveiled a pioneering joint venture, UAEV, to provide and promote fast and accessible electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the UAE.
What do we know so far?
Powered by Partnership: The UAEV partnership, between MoEI and Etihad WE, is a natural fit, combining the strengths, knowledge, understanding and expertise of two entities and regional experts in their respective fields. It is squarely designed to leverage the substantial benefits which come from Government and the private sector working in tandem, and will allow UAEV to grow to scale, rapidly and effectively.
Electric Mobility Acceleration: The envisaged expansion of EV infrastructure outlined by the UAEV leadership team aims to significantly accelerate the UAE’s transition to cleaner transportation. In the long-term, the project will contribute to the reduction of emissions from the transportation sector, in support of the nation’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the National Water and Energy Demand Management Programme’s target of 40 per cent efficiency in transport. UAEV targets to deploy 100 chargers in 2024 and over 1000 chargers by 2030.
Economic Opportunity: UAEV highlights the economic potential of EV charging infrastructure for the UAE. The team at MoEI and Etihad WE stress that the economic benefits of EV infrastructure are wide-ranging, including job creation, and local economic benefits. A transition to electric vehicles can stimulate innovation and investment in new technologies, supply chains, and business models, driving economic growth and competitiveness – thereby building a more diversified economy for the future.
Deliberate Diversification: For Etihad WE, UAEV is another example of diversification. The leadership of the company has been steadily embarking on a strategy which seeks to expand and diversify the business around new and sustainable technology. Our goal is to ensure that Etihad WE’s pioneering and longstanding work across energy and water creates new value opportunities for communities, the company, and for the nation.
