The General Secretariat of the Supreme Legislation Committee in the Emirate of Dubai (SLC) organised a workshop titled ‘Linguistic Security’, attended by legal professionals from the SLC General Secretariat and various government entities in Dubai. This initiative forms part of national efforts to promote the Arabic language and affirm its pivotal role as a cornerstone of the UAE’s national identity, while exploring the effective legislative mechanisms for its promotion and protection.

The workshop addressed several key themes, including the concept and dimensions of linguistic security, the deep connection between language and national identity, legislative frameworks for safeguarding the Arabic language, the role of linguistic policy in maintaining the integrity of the language, and an overview of government initiatives aimed at promoting linguistic security.

H.E. Ahmad Saeed bin Meshar Al Muhairi, SLC Secretary General, emphasised the Arabic language’s pivotal role in shaping the national identity. His Excellency stated “Arabic is not merely a means of communication, but a living expression of our shared heritage and sense of belonging. It embodies the memory of our civilisation and serves as a bulwark protecting our national identity against the challenges of modernity.”

H.E. Al Muhairi added: “Preserving the Arabic language requires the concerted effort of all concerned entities to safeguard it and enhance its applications, in line with the vision of our wise leadership, which places the Arabic language at the heart of our national priorities.”

The presenter of the workshop, Mr. Salem Ibrahim Al Ahmad, Head of the Research and Publications Section at the SLC General Secretariat explained: “The Linguistic Security workshop reflects our ongoing commitment to bridging linguistic authenticity and legislative precision. Language plays a central role in legislative drafting, and any ambiguity or obscurity in expression may lead to multiple interpretations that could compromise the interests of individuals and institutions alike. Enhancing the linguistic competence of legal professionals in precise linguistic drafting constitutes an investment in justice and the rule of law. Accurate and clear legal language prevents disputes and protects rights.”

The ‘Linguistic Security’ workshop forms part of a wider series of initiatives undertaken by the SLC General Secretariat to reinforce the linguistic dimension of legislative work and strengthen the Arabic language as one of the main pillars of national identity.
