5 Superfoods to boost your child’s immunity

A persistent worry of mothers is the need to boost the immunity of children through natural diets. In present times, this has assumed greater importance.  The best and most enduring way to build immunity is through natural foods which create internal resilience in the body while working with the staple diets to accelerate internal strength. The body takes to these natural immunity boosters very well. 

Why is immunity in kids so important?

Immunity is our body’s ability to defend itself from probable illnesses. It means fighting viruses, rejecting infections, and even clearing up vital organs for protection against infections. While children are blessed with an innately strong immune system, it can be further boosted with what are commonly called superfoods, that strengthen inner resilience of the body. 

Superfoods are an optimal arrangement. They provide the required nutrients in the quickest and most convenient manner. Take a look at these five important superfoods that can be included in the form of quick bites, for easy nutrition and taste. 

A healthy boost with Chia seeds: Did you know that 3 tablespoons of Chia seeds match the nutrition from a glass of milk? Chia when soaked in a drink transforms into a gelatinous consistency making it easy to swallow and digest. It provides complete protein for growth, is rich in calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus that help maintain strength and immunity. A bowl of yogurt with some fresh-cut fruits and a sprinkle of pre-soaked chia seeds are just right for a healthy start to the day. You could also add Chia seeds to fruit-based smoothies and homemade ice-creams topped with a drizzle of honey to keep the excitement going.

Add flax seeds to your bakery list: The next time   you bake muffins, cakes, cookies or biscuits, don’t forget to add a dash of flax seeds powder to the dough. Flax seeds are a rich source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, flaxseeds protect your body from bacteria and viruses and help improve your system’s immunity.  

Quinoa to the rescue: With children, it’s never about what to eat but also how to get them to eat it! Thankfully, owing to its versatility, Quinoa is one superfood you have ample scope to get creative with. Known to be the best source of plant-based protein, Quinoa is rich in amino acids that are strengthen the immune system. This makes it one of the most recommended foods for kids. Quinoa pizza bites are perfect while on some other days, Quinoa can be coupled with crispy chicken strips. It also makes for a great gluten free substitute of wheat; so, try replacing main course accompaniments such as breads and pasta with Quinoa as a healthier choice. With options in plenty, you will never worry about enough nutrition for growing-up kids.

Nuts and Dried Fruits: Almonds, dates, pistachios, peanuts, and raisins provide plenty of nutrition that boost immunity. They are packed with nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, healthy fats, proteins and fibre which help children grow and develop and are also rich in Omega 3, zinc and magnesium which boosts immunity.  Nuts and other dried fruits are a great on-the-go snack. If your child fusses over eating them, you can course grind them for a makeover into energy bites and bars or simply slice them thin to enhance flavours in smoothies. They can also be generously sprinkled over traditional desserts and thick ice cream shakes to combine taste and health.

Enjoy rice: Rice is one of the first dishes introduced to babies, mainly because it is easy to digest and does not cause allergies. While white rice will give your child the much-needed energy boost, brown rice and sprouted brown rice are also a great option since they are richer in fibre and GABA which is a naturally occurring neurotransmitter that is enhanced when rice grains are germinated. Nutrients in sprouted brown rice improve digestive system and boost immunity. This makes rice an ideal choice from the age of 6 months onwards. Add egg to brown rice or sprouted brown rice to stir up a delicious fried rice or toss in some veggies and chicken to make a biryani.
