Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: In a collaborative effort across entities, Abu Dhabi last night saw iconic landmarks across the capital light up in blue – the color of – to mark World Diabetes Day, which takes place annually to spread awareness about diabetes prevention and care.

The light up initiative included 13 landmarks around the city being lit in blue – the color of the circle symbol of diabetes- namely, Mubadala Tower, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Emirates Palace, Hazza Stadium, Mohammed Bin Zayed University, W Hotel and Etihad Arena on Yas Island; as well as numerous Mubadala Health facilities such as Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, HealthPlus Diabetes & Endocrinology Center, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Danat Al Emarat Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital Abu Dhabi.

In light of the prevalence of diabetes in the region and in line with its commitment to improving the health of the community, Mubadala Health places diabetes care, education, training and research amongst its priorities, and constantly engages with the public to raise awareness about how to prevent the onset of diabetes or better manage it.

On this occasion, Hasan Jasem Al Nowais, Mubadala Health’s Chief Executive Officer, says: “Globally, it is expected that the number of people living with diabetes will double by 2040. So through spreading awareness and capturing the public’s attention, our aim is to help break the stigma associated with the disease; encourage people to be screened before they develop symptoms; prevent complications; and emphasize the role that healthy lifestyle choices play in managing type 1 diabetes and in preventing or managing type 2 diabetes.”

The Mubadala Health network has two centers – with branches across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi – that are dedicated to treating diabetes and endocrinological conditions. The first, Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC), was established in 2006 by Mubadala in partnership with the UK’s Imperial College London to address the growing demand for diabetes care in the UAE. The center now operates three branches across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, touching the lives of more than one million people through patient-centric programs and public health initiatives, and is also actively involved in diabetes research projects and training initiatives.

The second, the HealthPlus Diabetes & Endocrinology Center, was integrated into the Mubadala Health network earlier this year as part of the acquisition of a majority stake in UEMedical. The center was established in 2013 in partnership with Diabetes Zentrum Mergentheim from Germany, and also conducts education and training initiatives. The center focuses on patient care, clinical outcomes, education and training, with a shared commitment to a patient-centric approach, innovative technologies and continuity of care delivered through a multidisciplinary team under one roof.

Alongside diabetes and endocrinological care, both centers offer services related to diabetes comorbidities and complications, including ophthalmology, cardiology, podiatry, psychology, diabetes education and nutrition, as well as bariatric surgery in conjunction with fellow Mubadala Health partner, Healthpoint.

In addition, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, another Mubadala Health partner, offers a Diabetes Mellitus Program, which is committed to ensuring that adult patients with diabetes receive advanced medical care and effective patient education to prevent and manage complications associated with their disease. The Diabetes Mellitus Program caregivers collaborate with other multidisciplinary programs and subspecialties across Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Institutes to ensure comprehensive care.
