EEG Conducts its annual Students’ Workshops virtually under the theme “Tale of Unequivocal Provider: The Abode of Life”

Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) organised the 21st cycle of the annual Students’ Workshops from the 25th – 27th, October 2021 with the participation of more than 300 students under the theme “Tale of Unequivocal Provider: The Abode of Life”. The workshop provided students with an interactive platform and hands-on activities to be implemented throughout the day. The educational content was developed in-house with the focus of connecting environmental issues with social and economic ones and industrial approaches that have led the world to be in such a critical plight.

Mrs. Habiba Al Marashi in her opening speech said: “It has been nearly two years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The world has changed a lot during this relatively short period of time. However, this time around, we did learn from previous pandemics that have ravaged the world in the last few centuries. What about the environment? On Oct. 3 Cyclone Shaheen hit Oman, after traveling through the Gulf of Oman from the Arabian Sea. California has found itself under siege from more large-scale fires burning with greater intensity than at any time on record. The volcanic eruption in Spain has caused displacement of over 8000 people. Swathes of India are battling deadly floods and landslides after heavy monsoon rains, just the latest example of how the vast country is on the frontline of climate change. These are just some examples of the kind of stress the world is dealing with due to climate change. Why have we not learned from history? How can we tackle this issue and diminish the consequences?”

As an accredited NGO of the United Nations Environment Programme, and the United Nations Convention for Combatting Desertification and as members of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and The United Nations Global Compact, EEG aims through this programme to deliver on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #4: “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”.  Since inception of this workshop, EEG has engaged more than 7000 students and 1500 teachers in this programme from 1400 schools. These series of annual workshops have played a pivotal role in driving the agenda of sustainable development. It is able to arm our youth with sound knowledge on sustainability and foster their responsibility to tackle global challenges.

Highlighting the impact of Climate Change on the natural environment, humans, and other species, the workshop addressed topics such as environmental degradation, biodiversity, extinction and habitat fragmentation while coupling the theory explanations and discussions with interactive activities which sparked imagination and unlocked creativity amongst the students attending the workshop on-line.

We are rapidly approaching irreversible climate tipping points. But we still have a chance to meet the 1.5degree Celsius goal and protect ourselves from the worst climate impacts. We must take the historic opportunity to tackle climate change towards this; The UK is hosting the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in November. In Accordance with the COP26, EEGs Students Workshop programme offered students the opportunity to broaden their knowledge, sharpen their environmental skills, motivate them to enhance the overall quality of the environment and guide them towards responsible, ethical and environmental behavior.

Emirates Environmental Group is determined to continue with the same vigor and dedication to inspire and motivate the younger generations to lead environmental change and prosper in a sustainable society.
