- 52 buildings are connected to the new plant and 14 more in the next two years
Dubai, UAE: Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, has announced the commencement of operations of its district cooling plant at Dubai Production City project with a cooling capacity of 47,000 refrigeration tons (RT). The contract worth AED 197 million was awarded by Empower last year for building this new generation district cooling plant.
This is the first permanent plant room out of the three ones established in the area with a total capacity of 125,000 RT for the whole project upon completion. 52 multi-use buildings are already connected to the new plant during the first phase; and 14 additional buildings will be connected in the next two years.
Empower stated that starting the plant is part of company’s strategy to meet the increasing demand for district cooling services in the area, and its keenness to provide high-quality and environmentally friendly cooling services through highly efficient cooling plants. The new permanent plant includes two Thermal Energy Storage (TES) tanks that can cover the needs during the peak hours and reduces additional load on the state power grid by optimizing the inflow and outflow of chilled water.
Ahmad bin Shafar, CEO of Empower said: “We are using advanced technologies in the new district cooling plant in Dubai Production City to ensure the lowest energy and water consumption. In addition to the TES technology that reduces the pressure on the state power grid, the award-winning Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) system, is also being used in the plant to generate make-up water necessary for the cooling towers. Using TSE system in its operations will reduce the consumption of fresh water and, thus, contribute to preserving natural resources for future generations.”
Bin Shafar also highlighted that the plant is currently connected to Empower’s existing chilled water network of 20 kilometers with provision for future extension of the network for serving the new buildings coming up in the area and the linking with Empower’s state-of-the-art remote Command Control Centre (CCC) which is also completed by using advanced SCADA system.
“The company has taken into account the current and future urban expansions in Dubai Production City while designing the project. The plant is designed considering the aesthetic aspect of the modern urban development in Dubai, as well as the general appearance and the external appearance of the buildings in the area. With the highest sustainability standards, the plant was designed and constructed to set the new project for the gold classification award granted by the American Green Building Council as per the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) criterion.” He added.
Empower provides district cooling services to more than 1,252 buildings, catering to more than 140,000 customers, with a total cooling capacity of 1.64 million Refrigeration Tons (RT). The Company offers eco-friendly district cooling services to a number of high-profile developments, such as Dubai Waterfront, Bluewaters, Dubai International Financial Centre, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Palm Jumeirah, Discovery Gardens, Ibn Battuta Mall and many others.
