G20 Leaders Unite To Enhance Pandemic Preparedness

Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: In an interconnected world, challenges are global. COVID-19 demonstrated that a pandemic crisis can result in devastating health, social and economic impacts across the world. The need for global coordinated actions are more important than ever. This week, the leaders of the G20 will meet for the second time under the Saudi Presidency to address the most pressing challenges of our times, with the vision to take further steps to overcome the pandemic while building an inclusive, sustainable and resilient future for all.

The pandemic revealed the deep and pervasive weaknesses in health systems worldwide and vulnerability in the capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to pandemic threats.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 outbreak, the G20 showcased leadership to coordinate responses and work as a united front to protect lives’ and livelihoods. The leaders gathered in an extraordinary virtual Leaders’ Summit where they agreed to take concrete actions to support the development and distribution of needed diagnostic tools, therapeutics, and vaccines,  and enhance health systems, pledging over $21bn at the outset of the crisis to support funding in global health capacities.

Throughout the year, the G20 progressed their commitments to find solutions to current challenges, address the impacts of the current pandemic and mitigate the risks of future pandemics. On a global scale, the members injected over $11 tr so far to safeguard the economy and protect livelihoods, secure the continuity of businesses, and protect the most vulnerable segments of the population.

The role of the G20 in the fight against the pandemic is not over. The G20 continues to focus its efforts towards building a better future for all. This year, under the Saudi G20 Presidency, the forum brought together countries and organizations with a common ambition to protect people, restore growth, and recover stronger.

The G20 is committed to spare no effort to overcome the pandemic. The G20 leaders established a forward-looking agenda under the Saudi Presidency, on which they worked collectively during the pandemic and its toll on humanity., restore growth and recovery, as well as accelerate development and delivery of vaccines, diagnostics and treatments.

The G20 countries have committed their efforts on both addressing the immediate challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and on ensuring the world is better prepared to deal with future health crises by enhancing pandemic preparedness and response.
