Foundation launches on World Prematurity day at Expo 2020

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The Leo & Mia Foundation, an international nonprofit, announces its official launch at Expo 2020. The foundation focuses on developing the vital systems that prevent, treat and provide necessary care for preterm babies and their mothers in the first 1000 days of their lives

Commenting on the launch, Dr. Gopakumar Nair, CEO of Leo & Mia Foundation expressed, “We are absolutely delighted to officially launch today and bring a message of hope to babies and their mothers in the UAE and around the world. Passion and dedication is what drives us to create a hopeful pathway for preterm babies together with their families to live a joyful life and realize their full potential.”

Commemorating the World Prematurity day, the U.K. based foundation made a series of announcements a commitment to create a world class knowledge base as well as guidelines for early childhood and cognitive development. Furthermore, it will soon be launching a whole family integrated approach here in the UAE with the Latifa women and children Hospital to tackle the emotional, financial and physical toll of preterm births on families.

According to WHO, babies born before completing the gestation period of 37 weeks are considered preterm babies. 1 in 10 babies are born preterm equating to 15 million babies annually and often results in complications making it one of the leading cause of death in children under the age of 5.

Globally and particularly in developing countries there is a shortage of healthcare resources for preterm births. Babies born too early that do survive may face difficulties in breathing, vision and hearing. “Being born too soon, Preterm babies need a continuum inside and outside the hospital” explains Dr. Nair.

Partnering with world-class organizations, such as the University of Oxford and other development partners, the Foundation has successfully delivered 9 field projects in 5 countries.
