Facility has capacity to produce 20,000 tons of high-quality organic fertilizer annually
Abu Dhabi-UAE: Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center (Tadweer) announced the commencement of operation at Liwa Compost Plant in Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi which underwent refurbishment to improve its production efficiency.
With a capacity to produce 20,000 tons of compost annually, the facility recycles agricultural and animal waste generated by farms and ranches in Al Dhafra region and turns it to high-quality organic fertilizer that comply with the requirements of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE).
The compost plant caters to the daily needs of municipal projects, farms and palm oases in Al Dhafra region, providing them with the required quantities of organic fertilizer. An eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizer, organic fertilizer helps improve soil fertility, reduce water consumption, and contribute to environmental protection.
The production process at Liwa Compost Plant was improved as part of Tadweer’s continued efforts to protect the emirate’s environment and promote its sustainable development. The Center collaborated with Barari Natural Resources to manage the facility and enhance its production capacity in line with the latest technical standards. These efforts articulate Tadweer’s keenness to set up state-of-the-art recycling facilities to achieve its sustainability goals.
The plant contributes to the environmental sustainability and continued development of organic cultivation in the emirate through laying a solid foundation for the management of agricultural and animal waste in Abu Dhabi. This will translate into a profound impact on the emirate’s food security.
The effective management of agricultural and animal waste is crucial to ensuring the protection of environment, and safeguarding human, animal and plant life across the emirate. As organic compost is free from pathogens, contaminants, and chemical compounds, it helps the emirate achieve its long-term objectives of enhancing soil fertility through improving its physical and chemical properties and supplying nutrients essential for plant nutrition.
His Excellency Dr Salem Al Kaabi, Director General of Tadweer, said: “The refurbishment of Liwa Compost Plant articulates Tadweer’s holistic vision to protect the environment and promote eco-friendly practices in the management of agricultural and animal waste. In adopting the latest international standards in compost production, the plant reduces the need to import chemical fertilizers, and gives a strong boost to eco-friendly manufacturing industries.”
Al Kaabi added: “In increasing the capacity of Liwa Compost Plant, Tadweer seeks to bring about a paradigm shift in integrated waste management, while supporting the sustainable development goals outlined by Abu Dhabi Vision 2030.”
