Advanced surgical expertise and patient-centered approach enable full recovery following severe post-operative complications

Abu Dhabi, UAE,July 2026 – SEHA’s Tawam Hospital, part of PureHealth, the largest healthcare group in the Middle East, has successfully managed a highly complex surgical case, reinforcing its position as a regional leader in advanced surgical care and multidisciplinary treatment for critically ill patients.

The case involved a young patient who was transferred to Tawam Hospital three weeks after undergoing a subtotal colectomy at another facility. Upon arrival, Tawam’s clinical team quickly identified signs of a severe, anastomotic leak, a rare but life-threatening complication following colorectal surgery resulting in advanced sepsis.

Recognising the urgency of the situation, the Hospital’s surgical and critical care teams initiated immediate intervention. An emergency reoperation revealed multiple intra-abdominal abscesses, widespread inflammation, and a failing anastomosis. The patient required intensive care support alongside coordinated input from a multidisciplinary team.

Through this comprehensive and collaborative approach, the patient’s condition stabilised, leading to a full recovery. Months later, a successful stoma reversal was performed without complications, allowing the patient to return to normal life.

Dr. Mahdi Al-Taher, Consultant General, Gastrointestinal and Oncologic Surgeon at Tawam Hospital, said: “This case highlights the critical importance of early detection and timely surgical intervention in managing complex post-operative complications. At Tawam Hospital, we bring together advanced surgical expertise and multidisciplinary collaboration to address even the most challenging cases, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.”

Dr. Al-Taher added: “Beyond the clinical complexity, this case is a testament to the resilience of the patient and the dedication of our teams to delivering compassionate, evidence-based care at every stage of recovery.”

The case underscores Tawam Hospital’s commitment to a patient-centered approach, where care extends beyond surgical intervention to include comprehensive post-operative monitoring, psychological support, and long-term rehabilitation. This holistic model ensures not only survival, but meaningful recovery and improved quality of life.

Anastomotic leaks remain among the most serious complications in colorectal surgery, with delayed diagnosis significantly increasing morbidity and mortality.

Building on its strong track record in managing complex cases, SEHA’s Tawam Hospital continues to reinforce its position as a center of excellence in complex surgical care across the UAE. This achievement reflects commitment to delivering world-class, patient-centered healthcare through advanced surgical expertise, multidisciplinary collaboration, and compassionate care, ensuring optimal outcomes for patients with high-risk and complex medical conditions.
