EVENT COINCIDED WITH WORLD YOUTH SKILLS DAY, A UNITED NATIONS-RECOGNIZED CELEBRATION

Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi, UAE: Today (Thursday 15 July) marks World Youth Skills Day, and youngsters from across the UAE recently showcased their creative talents at the Yas in Schools National Finals presented by ADNOC, which were held at Yas Marina Circuit and featured a host of winners, including 12-year-old Shyaam Nanthan, who triumphed in two separate categories at an event which aims to develop and inspire “The Engineers of the Future.”

Now in its eighth year, World Youth Skills Day, a United Nations-recognized event, celebrates the strategic importance of equipping young people with the required skills for employment and entrepreneurship, and this year’s event pays tribute to the resilience and creativity of youth following the outbreak of Covid-19.

There was no shortage of talent on show at the Yas in Schools National Finals presented by ADNOC, which were broadcast live on Yas Marina Circuit’s official YouTube channel, Yas TV, and provided a platform from which those youngsters involved were able to showcase their knowledge of STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) subjects.

Following hot on the heels of the ticket launch for this year’s FORMULA 1 ETIHAD AIRWAYS ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX, the event played host to its highest number of participants to date, with over 460 students taking part from a total of 60 schools.

Among that figure were 75 children from Abu Dhabi’s Western region, with areas such as Madinat Zayed, Ruwais, Ghayathi and Sila significantly represented.

The Yas in Schools programme was designed for students to acquire important skills in a fun and relaxed environment as they work together collaboratively, in teams, to design, innovate, manufacture, test and race small-scale model cars.

Saif Al Noaimi, Acting CEO, Abu Dhabi Motorsports Management, said: “Yas Marina Circuit really enjoyed hosting the National Finals and we’re really proud of everybody who made it to this stage,  It was an exciting event and everybody who competed is a winner. We hope all of the children involved enjoyed the experience and found it beneficial.

“The teachers from the schools who participated have put a lot of effort into it, investing in the programme. The parents have given a lot by inspiring their children to take part, and the judges have given up their own time to attend and play an important role in the event. We thank them all.

“Ultimately, the children are the champions of this programme. They’re the ones who have lived it over the last few months, and we really enjoyed watching them produce some fantastic work. They should be extremely pleased with their efforts.

“ADNOC are the title sponsor of the Yas in Schools programme and without their support we wouldn’t be here. We really appreciate it and we are hugely thankful.”

Ghannam AL Mazrouei, ADNOC Director, Group Human Capital, said: “We are pleased to support the National Finals, enabling today’s youth to push the boundaries of what they can achieve. Advancing STEM education in the UAE is a key objective of ADNOC’s CSR strategy that aims to create sustainable positive social impact by delivering programs that support Ghadan 21 and the UAE’s economic development plans for Centennial 2071.

“The strategy is in line with the UAE leadership’s vision to build a modern education system focused on STEM,  empower young people to pursue such education and equip them with the skills and knowledge to meet the future needs of key business sectors in the country.”

Shyaam Nanthan showcased his incredible talents by emerging victorious in two separate categories. The 12-year-old, who attends Al Bateen Academy, won both the F1 in Schools Test Driver Challenge and the #EtharaAtHome Challenge, which celebrated ADNOC’s 50th anniversary and saw the best 50 creations on show at the National Finals.

Elsewhere, Hartland International School’s Propero triumphed in the Rookie category, while Team Istiophix, from Private International English School, were winners in the Professional category, with both teams now progressing to the World Finals which will take place later this year.

Other notable winners in the event included Madly Mochi (Brighton College Dubai) and Sidewinder (Hartland International School), who came out on top in the Professional and Rookie categories respectively as part of the Formula Ethara competition.

In the 4×4 in Schools category, meanwhile, first place went to Cyber Crawlers (Fun Robotics), who finished ahead of runners-up Mercurius (The Indian High School Dubai) and third-placed Triton (The Indian High School Dubai).
