Expanded CorroLogic® Cased Pipeline Corrosion Protection Support Now Available for US Pipeline Operators

9

Cortec® is pleased to announce expanded CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler application support for cased pipeline crossings across the United States, where pipelines are highly regulated by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). Thanks to a major CorroLogic® application partner investment, midstream pipeline operators now have easier access to enhanced corrosion protection technology for cased pipelines at road and railroad crossings where operators and safety managers struggle to maintain the effectiveness of cathodic protection (CP) and wax fillers.

Eric Uutala, preservation expert and Business Development Manager – CorroLogic®, notes, “CorroLogic® Filler provides an effective alternative to, or an enhancement of, traditionally used cathodic protection systems. We are encouraged by the ever-increasing adoption of VCI/VpCI® as an approved method for corrosion protection in cased pipeline crossings in North America, and having trusted, experienced partners will make it possible for Cortec® to support more projects.”

How Does CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler Protect Cased Pipeline Crossings from Corrosion?

When pumped into pipeline casings, CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler forms a gel that hinders the ingress of corrosives and emits Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors. This proprietary chemistry diffuses throughout the casing voids, forming a protective molecular layer on metal surfaces even in difficult to reach areas. Where wax fillers have crumbled or coatings have disbonded, these Vapor phase Corrosion Inhibitors help fill in the protection gaps and continue to work with or without active CP. As long as the end seals are good and the casing withstands pressure testing, CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler can be applied to minimize carrier pipe corrosion even in the presence of minor holes and cracks.

When Is CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler Most Important to Apply?

CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler is especially relevant to aging pipelines and those under new construction. When pipeline operators detect corrosion, shorted casings, or otherwise deficient cased pipeline corrosion protection on aging pipelines, CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler can offer stop-gap protection until replacement is justified. For example, where a shorted casing reduces CP effectiveness in cased crossings but excavation and repair are not practical, CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler can be added to the casing without tearing up the crossing or amping up the CP current. On the flip side, pipeline construction is the easiest time to add CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler and get cased pipeline protection off to a good start.

Who Should Apply CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler?

While CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler is much easier to work with than wax fillers or cathodic protection for cased crossings, it is important to choose a skilled professional to do the application. Eric Uutala notes, “As we continue to grow the use of CorroLogic® products in preserving cased crossings, having capable, experienced, and dedicated application partners is critical.” With the right equipment and experience, CorroLogic® application partners can get in and out of a job relatively quickly with minimal mess and interruption to pipeline operations.

Is CorroLogic® VpCI® Filler Available Outside the US?

As CorroLogic® application support expands in the United States, it continues to be available in many regions around the globe, including Canada, the Middle East, North Africa, and parts of Asia.
