Revolutionary Technology, The Allurion Gastric Balloon, Receives Approval for Teenagers

The world’s first and only gastric balloon weight loss device that requires no surgery, endoscopy, or anesthesia is approved in the UAE for teenagers.

Dubai, UAE : The Allurion Gastric Balloon has received approval from the UAE Ministry of Health for teenagers. The world’s first and only weight loss device that requires no surgery, endoscopy, or anesthesia is now available at select clinics in the United Arab Emirates and will tackle the worryingly increasing numbers of overweight and obese teenagers in the country.

The Allurion Program supports long-term weight loss through a revolutionary gastric balloon that creates a feeling of fullness by taking up space in the stomach, providing patients with the chance to take a break from dieting and that all too familiar feeling of hunger. The balloon, previously available for 18 – 65-year-olds is now approved for 16 – 65 years-olds and will provide a proven solution for teenagers in the UAE, with almost one in four now either overweight or obese.

A recent study that examined the prevalence of overweight and obesity numbers amongst both Emirati (n = 1035) and expatriate (n = 405) schoolchildren in the UAE showed that 14.7% of students were overweight and 18.9% were obese whilst 61.3% of students had a BMI percentile that was above the 50th CDC percentile. In another study of UAE school children, the prevalence of those overweight was found to range from 11.5 to 41.2% in age groups from 15–18 years, while the prevalence of obesity was found to range between 5.2 and 19.3% in age groups from 15–18 years. These figures are a representation of teenagers being above their healthiest weight, which is known to be associated with an increased risk of health-related problems. There is also considerable evidence that being overweight at a young age makes a person much more likely to be overweight or obese as an adult.

Thanks to the launch of the Allurion Program, and its approval for teenagers by the UAE Ministry of Health, with a swallowable capsule that does not require surgery, anesthesia or endoscopy; many more teenagers in the UAE will be able to lose weight easily and importantly, reduce the risk of having diseases attributed to being overweight or obese, including, cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and polycystic ovary syndrome to name but a few.

The Allurion Program continues to change the approach to weight loss. With over 50,000 patients worldwide, the Allurion Balloon registered with the UAE Ministry of Health is more than “just a gastric balloon”. The swallowable capsule which is placed during a brief 20-minute clinic visit expands in the stomach to around the size of a grapefruit and passes naturally after approximately 16 weeks, allowing patients to lose an average of 10 to 15% of their body weight within that time frame.

No weight loss program is a magic bullet, an effective program is based on good healthcare and good science. With this in mind, Allurion is a proven program that takes a holistic approach to losing weight. In addition to the revolutionary soft balloon that resides for a 16-week period, patients also benefit from six months of dietary support from a nutritionist to ensure lasting lifestyle changes alongside an Allurion connected scale and Health Tracker linked to an Allurion app to follow progress and give support.

Shantanu Gaur, co-founder and CEO of Allurion, said the company’s mission is to end obesity for all, regardless of age. “This approval marks a pivotal moment for Allurion and a positive step towards supporting both adults and teenagers on their weight loss journeys in the region and around the world,” Gaur said.

By combining a high-tech balloon solution with a full package of support to help its patients develop good lifestyle habits that can remain with them long after their balloon has gone, The Allurion Program results in more weight loss than diet or exercise alone. One clinical study with 509 patients showed that 95% of average weight loss with Allurion can be sustained at the 12 month follow up. Furthermore, in a study of 42 patients, the average weight loss with two sequential Allurion Balloons was 22.8% of total body weight loss. The maximum weight loss achieved was 40.9% body weight loss in 12 months.

A Gastric Balloon is a soft balloon placed in your stomach. The balloon takes up space in your stomach and induces weight loss by increasing the feeling of fullness. This means that you are more likely to reduce the amount of food you eat throughout the day.
